Plural Fraction

Isn't it a strange turn of semantics that when you have something that is less than one, it is pronounced in plural?

Let me demonstrate.

Lets say you have 1 gram of whatever. It will be exactly one gram. I wrestle half a gram away from you, so now you are left with 0.5 grams.

We have exactly one gram, and then we have 0.5 grams.

As they say, less is more.
